Who We Are

Rising Tide North America was born out of the conviction that corporate-friendly and state-sponsored "solutions" to climate change will not save us. We're a 100% volunteer, grassroots network of groups and individuals who take direct action to confront the roots causes of climate change. We promote local, community-based solutions to the climate crisis and support climate justice.

Rising Tide North America's network has over 50 local chapters, contacts and allies in 28 U.S. states, 3 Canadian provinces, 3 Mexican states and the District of Columbia. The network is the foundation of Rising Tide North America. In communities all over the continent, Rising Tide activist are promoting bottom-up climate solutions and organizing grassroots resistance to dirty energy.

Direct Action

Those in power offer little more than lip service when it comes to fighting climate change. It is up to us to take matters into our own hands, using creative non-violent direct action to disrupt the workings of climate criminals and to create the future we want to live in. Direct action is empowering, allowing us to sidestep the passive process of waiting for change from those in power. When the government won’t stop a power plant from being built, we put our bodies in front of the bulldozers to shut down construction. When we want healthy, sustainable food for our community, we plant gardens in our backyards and abandoned lots.

Climate Justice

Low-income, politically marginalized communities—historically those least responsible for CO2 emissions—are also those hardest hit by climate change and every aspect of the energy industry, from toxic pollution to resource wars. Rising Tide supports a “just transition,” in which social and ecological needs are prioritized in the shift to a low-carbon society. We oppose policies that cause collateral damage to communities or strengthen existing inequalities. No effort to create a livable future will succeed without the empowerment of marginalized communities and the dismantling of the systems of oppression that keep us divided.

Groups to mark Gulf Oil Spill anniversary with direct action against fossil fuel extraction.

On April 20th dozens of environmental, climate, and social justice groups will target government and corporate operations with aggressive protests and civil disobedience in an International Day of Direct Action Against Extraction being organized by Rising Tide North America.
