West Coast Convergence for Climate Action: July 28 – August 4, Eugene, OR

Southeast Convergence for Climate Action: August 5-11, Louisa County, VA (near Richmond)

Northeast Climate Confluence: July 27 – August 3, High Falls, NY

The past year has no doubt seen a tipping point in attitudes towards climate change in the US. All of the presidential candidates are talking about it, banks are touting their “Carbon Principles”, college campuses are claiming to be carbon neutral. And yet emissions are still rising and the climate crisis escalates.

They promise us alternative fuels and instead we get bread lines and food riots around the world. They promise us clean energy and give us “clean” coal and nukes instead. They call for regulations on greenhouse gases, then fight tooth and nail against even the weakest, most inadequate climate legislation that is proposed. They tell us the markets will take care of it, and then try to privatize the very air we breathe.

It has become abundantly clear that the governments and corporations of the world will not solve the climate crisis, they are after all, part of the problem. Instead it is up to us to build a powerful grassroots movement to create the world we want. Fortunately, this movement is growing.

Building off the success of last years two Convergences for Climate Action in the US, we are excited to announce there will be 3 action packed gatherings this year. The climate convergences are gathering places for people of all ages and backgrounds to come together to take direct action against the root causes of climate change while working to build a just and sustainable world. This year the US convergences will take place alongside several similar gatherings in the UK, Germany, Australia, and beyond.

At the convergences there will be dozens of workshops and trainings, networking opportunities, and strategy sessions aimed at building a strong grassroots movement for climate justice. The convergences are spaces not only to fight climate change but to throw off the yoke of corporate control over our lives, working to build community controlled alternatives to Wall Street and Washington. The convergences will be models of the world we wish to live in, utilizing sustainable living skills and consensus based decision making by all participants.

The convergences are also an opportunity to hone your direct action skills and put them into, well, action. While creating sustainable alternatives is important, indeed necessary, we must also continue to confront those that are creating and profiting from the climate crisis. Each climate convergence will culminate in an exciting and empowering direct action taking on a different aspect of the climate crisis in each region.

So come on out for a fun filled week of networking, sharing skills, and strategizing. A list of likely workshops includes:

-Direct Action 101
-Debunking False Solutions to the Climate Crisis
-Permaculture
-Grassroots Disaster Response
-Blockades
-Community Organizing
-Supporting Immigrant Rights in the Face of Climate Change

Pranksters market “infidelity offsets” to downtown Portlanders

Portland, OR – With a bouquet of heart shaped balloons, a group of Portland-area climate activists calling themselves the “Greenwash Guerrillas” presented a highly experimental new business model to passersby in downtown Portland on Tuesday. Drawing their inspiration from so-called carbon neutral companies like Portland’s Climate Trust, the activists claim to be launching a new company called “Cheat Neutral.”

“Have you cheated on your girlfriend recently?” Lynne Tucker of Cheat Neutral asked a passerby, “For $19.95 we can clear up your conscience with an infidelity offset, and fund someone else to be faithful and neutralize the heartache in the world.”

The prank was part of “Fossil Fools Day”, an international day of protest focused on the energy industry and climate change. North Carolina residents kicked off the day of action in the US at 6:30am by locking themselves to bulldozers to stop the construction of a massive coal-fired power near Charlotte, NC. Police arrived on the scene and arrested 8 people, using pain compliance holds and tazers on those locked down.

Earlier, climate activists in Nottingham, England blockaded the offices of E-on, a company trying to build a new generation of coal-fired power stations in the UK, while another group in Wales halted work at one of the biggest opencast coal mines in Europe. Globally, more than 150 actions are expected on April 1st.

The events were called for by the international Rising Tide network in conjunction with Rainforest Action Network and the student Energy Action Coalition.

Portland’s action took place a half block away from The Climate Trust, which claims to “neutralize” businesses’ and individuals’ global warming impact. The activists say that this practice is akin to the Catholic Church selling “indulgences” during the 16th century. It is believed Portland’s protest was the first at a carbon offset company in the United States.

“Just like taking a faithful couple out to dinner doesn’t make cheating on your partner ok, paying money to forest parks and carpooling services does not “counteract” pollution from your car,” said Sakura Saunders of the Greenwash Guerillas. “We aren’t going to prevent a climate meltdown by asking people to plant a tree for every time they fill their car with oil. We need to revolutionize public transportation so there is no need to fill cars with oil in the first place.”

The activists point out that many offset projects of questionable integrity, relying on rough estimations and generalizations. Forest protection offsets in particular, which are a sizeable chunk of Climate Trust’s portfolio, have been exposed in the media as being scientifically dubious. Most of the carbon temporarily absorbed by the trees gets released into the atmosphere when the tree decomposes or burns, while fossil fuel carbon is inert unless it is extracted and burned. As such a tree can’t neutralize a smokestack.

“By selling the idea that climate change is something you can only address if you can pay for it, offset companies distract from these real changes that are needed to stop a climate catastrophe,” said Anthony Villagomez of Cascadia Rising Tide. “There is no way to negate our pollution; the solution to climate change is to stop burning fossil fuels.”

Fairfield, ME – Volunteers with the Native Forest Network (NFN) staged a mock “Fossil Fool’s Day” awards ceremony today at the offices of the Plum Creek Timber Company to draw attention to the potential impacts of the company’s Moosehead region development proposal on the regional and global climate. If approved by the Land Use Regulation Commission, the group says, Plum Creek’s plan would increase Maine’s total carbon emissions by nearly 8%– a growth in climate-altering pollution that the state’s communities and ecosystems cannot afford.

Dressed in putting-green regalia and calling themselves “Golfers For Wilderness Sprawl,” the group presented an April “Fossil Fool’s Day” award to Plum Creek, “in recognition of their profound and ongoing contributions to global climate change.”

“As elite golfers, we’re delighted by Plum Creek’s efforts to turn Maine into Florida,” said an award presenter calling himself Biffy T. Stumpsworthy, “We’re committed to fostering a hospitable, year-round outdoor golf climate in every corner of the globe, and Plum Creek’s Moosehead development plan will help to do just that. Plum Creek is making Maine ‘the way golf should be.’”

Amidst the theatrical spirit, the group’s message was serious: “There is a global scientific consensus that the world’s climate is warming due to human impacts,” said NFN volunteer Emily Posner, “This warming will lead to an increasingly unstable and unpredictable climate, with potentially devastating impacts to Maine’s environment and natural resource economy. Plum Creek’s plan will only contribute further to this crisis.”

A conservative 2007 estimate by Environment Northeast suggests that Plum Creek’s development could contribute nearly a half million tons of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere in its first ten years of operation. An additional quarter million tons of carbon storage capacity would be lost due to the development’s deforestation effects over a period of 50 years.

Somerset county, where today’s action took place, is the nation’s largest maple syrup producing region and could suffer great losses if a changing climate were to make sugar production unviable. Maine’s extensive coastline, along with its already-endangered fisheries, could be adversely affected by rising water levels and changing ocean temperatures.

Although the study by Environment Northeast provides a baseline estimate, the true impacts of the plan are unknown. Native Forest Network believes that they will be much greater than the 2007 study predicts.

“The study only focused on impacts from deforestation and from local and regional travel to the resort,” said NFN member Hillary Lister, “They didn’t account for the impacts of additional plane flights into Bangor International, the transporting of extensive construction and demolition debris outside the region by truck, the use of fossil fuels by construction equipment, and the indirect emissions embodied in manufacturing, shipping and use of construction materials.”

Two other factors were also left out of the study: the impacts of different methods of forest management and the potential impacts of industrial activities on Plum Creek’s proposed “Legacy Easement” land.

Plum Creek claims the proposed multi-million dollar purchase by mainstream environmental groups of a conservation easement will offset any negative carbon impacts of the resort development. This claim, says NFN, doesn’t hold water.

“Plum Creek’s easement basically amounts to the company getting paid millions to continue the same high-impact industrial forestry that they’ve been practicing for years,” says Lister, “The company’s practice of low-diversity, single-age planting and harvesting significantly reduces the ability of the forest to capture carbon. A diverse, multi-age forest–the kind that is supported by true sustainable forestry–has much more positive impact on reducing atmospheric carbon.”

In addition to urging the Land Use Regulation Commission to deny Plum Creek’s application for rezoning, Native Forest Network members also call for the next version of the LURC’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) to include clear standards for evaluating both immediate and cumulative impacts of development proposals on the regional and global climate. Public work sessions will be held across the state at the end of April to elicit input into the draft CLUP. NFN urges concerned citizens to attend and speak out about climate change.

Today’s event, part of an international “Fossil Fool’s Day” effort to identify root causes of climate change, was one of more than 100 protests organized worldwide. The message was both global and local: “This is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, and we are all called to respond,” says Emily Posner, “Maine’s North Woods are the lungs of the planet, and we as Mainers have a responsibility to protect them for our sake, for their sake and for the sake of future generations.”

ABOUT NATIVE FOREST NETWORK:

The Native Forest Network (NFN) is an all-volunteer group of people from across Maine working together to find out what Plum Creek’s Plan will mean for our communities and our future, and building just and sustainable alternatives that place the health of our communities before corporate profit. NFN is a designated intervenor organization in the Land Use Regulation Commission’s hearing process on Plum Creek’s rezoning proposal.

The International Rising Tide network and its allies are calling for a day of action against the fossil fuel industry on April 1st 2008…FOSSIL FOOLS DAY!

Confronted with melting ice caps, unprecedented species extinction, droughts, and extreme weather the fools at the head of the fossil fuel empire continue to plunder the earth, with the governments as willing court jesters at their side.

Been feeling like the level of climate activism in North America hasn’t matched the severity of the climate crisis? Well- so have we.

It’s time we ask ourselves, how serious are we about stopping climate change?

Let’s look at what we know:

The fossil fuel industry has been fooling with our lives (From extraction to combustion they have poisoned our air, polluted our water and ruined our climate).

Governments act as willing court jesters at the side of the fossil fuel empire.

The most appropriate response to climate change is to keep fossil fuels in the ground.

Let’s look at what we can do:

Come together and take action to unmask and disarm all the fossil fools.

Take steps in dismantling the fossil fuel empire.

Acknowledge that we need to perform actions that meet the seriousness of the problem.

Climate change threatens our very survival, and weather chaos is increasingly upon on us — it is up to us to launch a global uprising against the fossil fuel industry.

Your good fight is coming soon, step right up! On April 1st, 2008 join thousands of people around the world and begin to unmask and disarm the fossil fuel empire. We would be foolish to act otherwise.

For over a century the fossil fuel industry has been fooling with our lives. From extraction to combustion they have poisoned our air, polluted our water and ruined our climate. On April 1st, 2008, we’re going to unmask these dangerous jesters.

Target a local fossil fool … See the clowns investing in coal? The carbon offset contortionist or the oily strong man? … and join with thousands around the world in taking one step closer to dismantling the fossil fuel industry.

Find a fossil fool in your community and pull a prank that packs a punch.

In 2004, the Durban Group for Climate Justice convened in Durban, South Africa to question the central role of carbon trading and carbon offsets in governments’ responses to the climate crisis. Members of the Durban Group are traveling in various cities throughout the US and Canada in January, February, and March 2008 to share experiences of the failures of carbon trading in Europe, India, Brazil, Uganda and elsewhere, and to learn more about U.S. carbon trading plans and climate politics.

Five internationally recognized experts, fresh from the UN climate meetings in Bali, Indonesia, will be visiting the US and Canada. With over fifty groups in over forty cities, they’ll speak on carbon trading, carbon offsets, the effects of climate change and current international campaigns to keep the fossil fuels in the ground and affect meaningful change.

- Tamra Gilbertson, the Coordinator of the Environmental Justice Project at the Transnational Institute and a researcher with Carbon Trade Watch. This report documents the use and abuse of biofuels in the Global South, often under the guise of “offsetting” tradeable carbon credits.

In “Forest Fraud – say no to fake carbon credits,” Kill exposes the funding of monoculture tree plantations and the enormous market offering incentives to seize communally-held forests in developing countries. “Indigenous peoples and rural communities already struggling against the encroachment of these ‘green deserts’ onto their lands will be hit twice by climate change.”

- Larry Lohmann, the editor of Carbon Trading: A Critical Conversation on Climate Change, Privatisation and Power, an exhaustively-documented new book critiquing carbon trading. Carbon trading “dispossesses ordinary people in the South of their lands and futures without resulting in appreciable progress toward alternative energy systems,” says Lohmann. “Tradable rights to pollute are handed out to Northern industry, allowing them to continue to profit from business as usual. At the same time, Northern polluters are encouraged to invest in supposedly carbon-saving projects in the South, very few of which promote clean energy at all.”

- Kevin Smith, a researcher with Carbon Trade Watch. Smith’s report “The Carbon Neutral Myth” documents and exposes the booming industry dedicated to avoiding the core of the climate issue, and offers expert advice on constructive ways forward.

The authors and activists will describe their campaigning at the recent the UN Climate Summit in Bali, Indonesia last December, as well as describe the failed strategies the global financial community is still trying to force on negotiators from developing countries.

Greetings friends and supporters of Rising Tide North America,

This is the time of year many people donate money and gifts to groups, organizations, and causes they care deeply about. We thought we’d share with you a brief summary of 2007 for RTNA, that you may see what we have accomplished this year and whether you relate to our work and approach. Would you like to see us grow and build our increasingly dynamic network of groups and individuals striking directly at the root causes of anthropogenic climate change? We are humbly yet vehemently asking you, your family, friends, neighbors, colleagues and friends to support RTNA’s grassroots efforts in any way with which you are comfortable and please forward his plea far and wide.

RTNA is comprised of full-time, all-volunteer activists who receive very little outside funding for our many projects. Often we utilize our own rather frugal monetary resources (usually obtained through odd jobs) to support many of these projects. 2007 has been an exciting year for us, here is just a sample of what we and our allies have been up to: * After our intense and productive in-person strategy meeting in Austin, TX last February, our Spring Climate Action Tours traveled across the East Coat, West Coast, Midwest and Rockies Regions spanning over four months and visited hundreds of high schools, community centers, info shops, radio stations, and colleges giving interactive workshops about climate change and what people can do to take action in their own communities. This tour focused on community organizing and sustainability, local autonomy, debunking false solutions and exposing corporate and government greenwashing, and elucidating other critical issues conspicuously missing from the current climate debates. This tour often resulted in instantaneous networking and collaborating with many meaningful efforts already in place in each locality, ranging from community gardening and alternative energy to ecosystem defense and native land rights and sovereignty struggles. To read more about the tour link to: http://risingtidetour.blogspot.com/

* Organized a billboard banner-hanging in Asheville, NC protesting a new coal-fired power plant; the project was cancelled shortly thereafter. To read more link to: http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/2007/02/06/2-arrested-in-protest-against-woodfin-power-plant/

* Gave a workshop on Carbon Trading, its glaring flaws, and its colonial implications at the US Social Forum in Atlanta in June.

* Organized two Convergences for Climate Action in August one on the west coast in Skamokawa, Washington, the other in the Southeast near Ashville, North Carolina. Hundreds of people came together for a week workshops and skill-shares and a coordinated day of direct action targeting Liquefied Natural Gas, Bank of America’s funding of Coal, and PacifiCorp Energy’s developments of coal-fired power plants, and salmon-killing dams on California’s Klamath River. To find out more link to: http://www.climateconvergence.org/

* RTNA’s False Solutions Campaign launched with an action at the Point Carbon conference in New York City, publicly offering the “Carbon Traitors” a “deed to the sky” for their plans to commodify the Earth’s atmosphere and industry’s greenhouse gas emissions. To find out more: http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/2007/10/30/rising-tides-greenwash-guerillas-discrupt-carbon-traitors-ahem-carbon-traders-conference/

* Civil disobedience lock-down action at Duke Energy’s 800-megawatt power plant in Charlotte, North Carolina; 2 people were arrested. To read more link to: http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/2007/11/17/duke-energy-headquarters-blockaded-in-opposition-to-new-coal-plant/

* Using fishing boats, sailboats, kayaks, and an umiak, participants in an occupation action crossed the Columbia River from Oregon to the Washington shore and occupied the beach at PacifiCorp Bradwood where Northern Star Natural Gas intends to construct a large LNG terminal.. There were no arrests-likely because the company wanted to avoid the negative publicity.

* Most recently Rising Tide played a major media prank on North America’s biggest coal and oil companies, by announcing that the members of the greenwashing lobby group The United States Climate Action Partnership had all committed to a 90% reduction in their greenhouse gas emissions. The hoax garnered international media attention. To read more link to: http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/2007/12/03/international-hoax-targets-us-business-consortium-amidst-bali-climate-negotiations/
* RTNA is currently working with Native Forest Network-Gulf of Maine to stop a proposed resort and gated community proposed by Plum Creek Timber Co. in the Maine North Woods. Two of RTNA’s organizers are testifying as expert witnesses against Plum Creek’s dismal plan in state hearings hosted by Maine’s Land Use Regulatory Commission this month. To read more link to: http://www.nrcm.org/issue_plumcreek.asp

*Marea Creciente Mexico-Rising Tide Mexico is helping organize a caravan delegation of women to the 3rd Gathering of Zapatista Communities with the Peoples of the World “Comandanta Ramona”. La Caravan America del Valle is a collaborative effort between various groups, collectives, and individual activists in Mexico City and Oaxaca. To read more go to: http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/2007/12/08/la-caravana-america-del-valle/

And Here Are Some of Our Exciting Plans for 2008:

-Coordinating three to Four Convergences for Climate Action next Summer (West Coast, Southeast, Northeast, and Rockies/Intermountain West).

-More workshops and trainings at high schools, community centers, and colleges. RTNA has just completed a menu of workshops that we offer to any interested parties-ranging from ant-oppression and non-violence trainings to video documentation and editing, climate science and ecosystem defense to Indigenous land rights and food sovereignty. To learn more, link to: http://www.risingtidenorthamerica.org/wordpress/category/educational-undertakings/

So as you may have surmised by now-WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!! As a fledgling, all-volunteer collective it is more difficult for us to get funding than it is for more mainstream organizations-even if we are already off to an auspicious start. If you like our work and can help us grow by donating money or materials, we would be so appreciative!
For donations over $100, we have an excellent music “Climate Compilation” CD with appropriate songs and spoken-word from various radical and progressive musicians, as well as unique clothing patches made by the Beehive Collective in Maine. For those who donate over $500 we will also throw in an RTNA T-shirt (also designed by the Beehive Collective). Donors will also receive our monthly email newsletter.

Call to action
International Day of Action January 26 2008

Join Via Campesina and other organizations worldwide in demanding Food Sovereignty and an end to the corporate control of our food system by global agribusiness

On January 26 self-organized groups from all around the world will take creative action in their community. This will manifest in many ways, from nonviolent direct action, civil disobedience, street theater, convergences, teach-ins and other activities and events. Grassroots movements around the world are making their voices heard and saying “Another World is Possible” in coordination with the World Social Forum.

In solidarity with global farmer’s movement Via Campesina who has called for action on this day, Rainforest Action Network, Rising Tide North America, and the Student Trade Justice Campaign are calling for individuals and grassroots groups to take action to demand food sovereignty by rejecting the industrialized food system controlled by international institutions and global agribusinesses and promoting the transition to sustainable, small-scale, decentralized local food systems.

Why are we calling for this? Because people’s lives depend on it. Our globalized food system, and the increasing push for industrial-scale agrofuels are pushing people off their lands around the world and depriving small farmers, Indigenous communities, and millions of people everywhere from access to land and resources to grow their own food. While this may seem archaic to many people in the US who buy their food at the supermarket, 70% of the world population make a living though producing food.

Transitioning to local food systems is a direct response to fighting climate change, preserving forests, and other ecosystems that are critical to the earth’s carbon cycling capacity as well as standing in solidarity with farmers, Indigenous communities and landless people worldwide.

This transition is necessary to prepare ourselves for the changing climate by taking back control and local ownership of land, seeds, biodiversity, water and where and how we produce our food.

There are many ways our actions can manifest: by targeting agribusiness giants like Cargill, Monsanto and ADM that are headquartered in the US we can act in solidarity with people in the global south (and here in the U.S.) where these agribusinesses are wreaking havoc on people’s food sovereignty.

You can take action in a variety of ways, some ideas include: organizing a demonstration at a supermarket chain, or a large-scale agrofuels refinery that isn’t community based, or finding out what agribusiness facilities are located in your town and take action against them using non-violent direct action, civil disobedience, banner hangs, flyering, and creative street theater. If action isn’t your cup of tea you can organize a local foods dinner to bring farmers and eaters together in your community and facilitate a discussion about what food sovereignty looks like in your community.

For example, the Student Trade Justice Campaign is coordinating students to organize actions outside key supermarkets chains in their community. They will be passing out flyers with information about why we should demand food sovereignty and challenge the corporate control over our food system as well as promote the transition to sustainable, small-scale, decentralized local food networks. On the same flyer, there will be information about local farmers’ markets and community owned local stores etc… To find out more contact Hilda@tradejusticecampaign.org

We are still in the process of designing and planning our actions and would like to include other organizations and individuals as much as possible. We have a phone conference call scheduled for Monday December 17 at 5pm Eastern/ 2pm Pacific. Please spread the word far and wide, we strongly desire your feedback and suggestions. The call in number will be 1-800-220-9875 and access code is: 53705125#

Have an action planned? Let us know, email jessie@risingtidnorthamerica.org

And please post your action on the World Social Forum website: www.wsf2008.net
