This spring, Rising Tide will bring the global struggle for climate justice to the belly of the beast, connecting the dots between the overarching crisis of climate change and the grassroots struggles of communities resisting the fossil fuel industry’s assault on their land and culture. Through partnering with local environmental and climate justice organizations in each region, we seek to amplify the voices of those most affected by climate change and the fossil fuel industry, boosting support for these revolutions on the local level and creating a culture of solidarity across lines of race, class and gender.

After the ceremony we drove back to the church compound outside of Oglala for an evening of food, music (Traditional, folk, blues/rock, & hip-hop), & spoken-word statements. Much to our pleasant surprise, RTNA was invited to speak on stage between bands-and 1 of us gave a 5-minute talk about RTNA’s efforts and aspirations (particularly along the lines of environmental justice/anti-racism, Indigenous solidarity, and cross-cultural alliance-building). After this, we were responded to what was almost a standing ovation-with hand-shakes, hugs, and tears-and invited back for next year’s ceremony. We gave away much literature and traded contact information, and were sent away with food, clothing, and many, many prayers and blessings. As we left, we were told: “Come back next year! The People will remember you!” We were also told by Leonard Peltier’s family that they would tell him about us. When we left that night to log some miles toward Lincoln before sleeping on the side of the road along with half the mosquitoes in the Great Plains-we were changed people….
There is hope.

On Wednesday, May 23-RTNA organizer Storm Waters granted a broadcast radio interview to KRZA Radio in Taos, NM/Alamosa, CO. This discussion focused on RTNA and our efforts at building solidarity with Indigenous Peoples. RTNA works to support Native Peoples in their struggles against corporate colonization, destructive industrial “developments” on their ancestral lands, climate injustice, and the associated violations of their cultures and sovereignty. Others who are hosting tour stops around New Mexico and Colorado also gave interviews-and these have been compiled into a news program leading up to the tour. This news show is available online at www.krzanews.org. People can stream that anytime, or download shows from that site. The interview is on the “Noticias del Dia” page. Since then, Kate Byrd-a truly awesome deejay, musician, and activist working w/ KRZA-has performed at & recorded 3 of our tour stops (Taos, San Luis, & Crestone) & has compiled the recordings into a broadcast that can also be linked to on the KRZA website:

Consumer capitalism and the climate-disrupting fossil fuel industries that power it are committing ecocide and genocide on a level unprecedented in human history, destroying not only entire cultures, mountains, and rivers, but the very life-support systems of the planet. The question before us is, what are we going to do about it? The possibilities for action are infinite and as diverse as all our combined ideas and desires. Two mutually-beneficial strategies that we will explore on the roadshow are: sparking and supporting local struggles against fossil fuel infrastructure, and building real, sustainable alternatives that foster community and decrease our dependence on the industries and institutions destroying the planet.

The Spring Roadshow will take a popular education approach to organizing and agitating for climate justice, employing music, participatory games and multi-media to foment life-affirming resistance. In addition to offering a “main event”, we are available for longer tour stops of up to a few days to do more in-depth workshops on direct action, anti-oppression, gaia theory/climate science, strategic campaigning, rebel clown army, food sovereignty, radical mental health, climate change resistance and ecodefense in Oceania, and the consensus decision-making process. Other trainings may be available depending on the tour date and location – let us know if you have specific ideas or needs.

Note: we define “climate-related” in a broad sense. Work around food sovereignty, preserving and restoring ecosystems, indigenous rights, mining, power plants, environmental justice, bikes, and energy production/consumption are all important pieces of the climate web. We also believe that climate change can only be addressed by exposing the intersections between the oppression of humans and the earth. The people hardest hit by climate-induced natural disasters have been and will continue to be those most disenfranchised by our society and least responsible for the emission of greenhouse gases: the poor, women, and people of color. RTNA is committed to challenging all forms of oppression in our organizing.

As you read this, a team of international climate activists is organizing a cutting-edge traveling multi-media tour to network communities across the continent and the planet in defense of the Earth’s climate-and we urgently need your help!

This Spring, Rising Tide North America (RTNA) will carry the global struggle for climate justice to the belly of the beast, connecting the nodes between the overarching crisis of climate change, ecosystem destruction, and the grassroots struggles of communities resisting the fossil fuel industry’s assault on their land, lives, and culture.

THE ROADSHOW

Through partnering with local environmental and climate justice organizations in each region, we seek to amplify the voices of those most affected by climate change and the fossil fuel industry, boosting support for these revolutionary movements on the local level and creating a culture of solidarity across lines of race, class, and gender, while serving as a voice for the ecosystems and wildlife of the planet.

The Spring Roadshow will take a popular education approach to organizing and agitating for climate justice, employing art, music, theatre, science, story-telling, bike culture, video, and more to foment life-affirming resistance. We will travel the continent in a bus powered by recycled veggie oil, bringing the struggle for justice and sustainability to community centers and college campuses around the continent.

In addition to offering a “main event,�? the RTNA Roadshow is available for longer tour stops of up to several days to conduct more in-depth workshops on direct action, anti-oppression, strategic campaigning, and the consensus decision-making process. Other trainings may be available depending on the tour date and location, and each community’s specific ideas or needs.

ABOUT US

The Roadshow participants are well-networked, experianced activists with a variety of skills and talents who form a tight, focused, mature, and productive collective. We are artists, writers, scientists, performers, musicians, mechanics (vehicular and bicycle), farmers, organizers, strategists, videographers/producers, teachers, networkers, activists, and visionaries.

CLIMATE CONVERGANCE SUMMER 07

Later in the Summer of 2007 the networking and alliance-building accomplished during the Roadshow will manifest itself in a convergence of groups and people committed to tackling the root causes of climate change and the heinous environmental injustices it engenders. This convergence will cement the strategizing already underway to take on headlong the root causes (as well as the impacts) of climate change.
